Q:

What kind of attachments can contain viruses?

A:

Basically, anything that is executable (able to run). You're generally safe with picture files, text files, and the like. However, it still pays to scan first.

Here is a (very) short list of the most common to watch out for:

exe

zip

scr

vbs

bat

com

pif

asp

doc

xls

Those are the most common. Please, please, I beg you, don't misinterpret this to mean that if you get one of these files it's automatically ...

Worms and Viruses

I got a question the other day from a reader wanting to know what the difference between a worm and a virus. So, without further adieu, here we go!

Viruses are self-replicating programs that embed themselves into other programs, or even the operating system , and use the host to carry out its function. Unless it attaches itself to an email, a virus stays put on the victim's computer.

A worm is also a computer program that makes copies of itself. They spread from ...

Special Printing in IE 7

As I'm sure you know, the headers and footers that always print along with a Web page can be rather irritating. I know very well which page I'm printing, so it's not useful to me to show the URL at the bottom of every printed page. So, if you'd like to turn the headers and footers off when you print out certain Web pages in Internet Explorer 7, here's how you can do it!

Simply go to the Print Preview window and then click on the button that says "Turn headers ...

Q:

I love to play games on my computer, but I'm always worried I'm going to mess something up. Can you please tell me some things I should do before I start playing? Thanks for your help!

A:

Oooh, what a great game question! If you're a big gamer (or maybe someone else in your household is), you probably get so excited every time you get a new game. You anticipate being able to play it and you just can't wait for the installation process to finish so that you can get started! Well, not ...

How often do you look at the items under your Start menu? What's all there? Is everything that's listed there really necessary? Well, either way you answer that last question, you may notice that in the very first column of your Start menu, there's a list of programs. You may also notice that those are programs you've recently used. Continue reading as I explain what exactly it is I'm rambling on and on about!

Q:

Every time my computer errors out, it automatically restarts itself and while that's okay in some situations, it doesn't give me much time to see what's causing the problem. Is there any way I can change that?

If so, please share it with me. Thanks!

Great question! When you go to shut down your computer, you may notice that there's an option for you to restart your computer as well. That option is there for all the times you just want to restart your computer, instead of completely ...

I recently got a new computer, so I obviously lost all of my saved files for my router passwords. It was very unfortunate, but it's all okay now, because I found this awesome Web site. With it, I was able to reset my router so that it would have a default password. And you can too!

All you have to do is select your router’s make from the drop down menu. I scrolled down to Linksys and then clicked on Find Password. It will then generate a list of all the Linksys router ...

Another reader asks: I have had my computer for quite some time now and my grandkids are always telling me I need to get a new one. They say mine is too slow and it just doesn't work right. As for me, I'm not convinced. Do you have any guidelines I can follow to see if I really should get a new one or not?

Back by popular demand! I always have people asking me this question and it's a problem I run into every once in awhile as well.
