Signs of Gulf recovery are unmistakable

BP’s claims payments to individuals and businesses last week topped the $6 billion mark. That money, in the hands of people who need it, is helping lead the way toward restoring the Gulf Coast region to economic health. And the signs of recovery in Mississippi are unmistakable.

To date, BP has paid more than $515 million to individuals and businesses in this state, with over half -- $260 million -- going to cover losses in Harrison County alone. State and local government agencies in Mississippi have received about $80 million from BP to cover legitimate claims and response efforts. Also, Mississippi boat operators were paid about $117 million through our Vessels of Opportunity (VOO) program.

BP has also made $20 million available to promote Mississippi tourism, with another $14 million pledged. These monies have helped fund events such as last June’s Billfish Classic, as well as the recent seven-day Cruisin’ the Coast, which attracted around 150,000 people with an anticipated positive economic impact of $20 million. Despite a sluggish national economy, the Gulf remains a premier destination and tourists are coming back. Some areas have seen record numbers.
