SANDESTIN — A 13-year-old girl died Thursday evening after she was pulled from the Gulf of Mexico.
The Walton County sheriff’s deputy who tried to rescue her also was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Alexandra “Allie” Powell of Alachua was swimming with her father, Jeff Powell, about 7 p.m. at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort.
She was the second swimmer to die this week off South Walton beaches.
Yafet A. Yoseph, 18, of Tennessee, went missing late Tuesday afternoon while swimming near Seaside. His body was found the next day near Seagrove Beach.
Red flags were flying at the time of both incidents, and the surf has been extremely rough recently.
